The more beauty and cleaning products I make at home, the more disenchanted I become with the store-bought stuff. Even though I make a lot of my own skin care products, once in a while I still pick up random bottles at the store because the package is sparkly and catches my eye. Then I inevitably turn it around to the back to read the ingredients label, and quickly remember why it is that I started making a lot of these things on my own. All of these chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, fragrances, etc. that we KNOW (it’s not just speculation people) are terrible for us are somehow STILL acceptable! Well they’re not acceptable to me. I’ve put my foot down.
A while back I asked on the FB page if you were less likely to make a recipe if you had to buy one or some of the ingredients online. Overwhelmingly your response was “Yes!”. Well, you want to know what I have to say about that? GET.OVER.IT. Why? Because there is an entire world of DIY out there, that is right at your fingertips with the help of Amazon mmmkkay? Don’t want to pay for shipping? Get over that too. For any order over $35 you get free shipping. And trust me, it’s not hard to spend $35 on Amazon (at least I don’t seem to have any trouble with it….). There are so many wonderful, quality ingredients out there that you can have at your doorstep in two days. How many times have you see a really cool DIY recipe and wanted to make it but then you looked at the ingredients and were like “crap, I cant find that at the grocery store”? Well nobody can. They don’t sell African Shea Butter at the local Kroger. Not here at least. So again I say, Amazon is your friend.
Now for the Calming Orange Vanilla Whipped Body Butter!
When I say that coconut oil is good for everything….I mean EVERYTHING. I use it in just about every single one of my beauty care products.
Why is this body butter calming you ask? The addition of lavender essential oil! Lavender oil is excellent for promoting a calming environment and it’s also fantastic at supporting normal skin health!
Vitamin E is best known for it’s antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals and keep your skin looking fresh and vibrant. Jojoba oil is incredibly moisturizing and can actually help regulate your bodies’ production of oil! Shea butter is full of Vitamin A. Orange Essential Oil is full of vitamin C, and we know that vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen, which helps maintain healthy skin.
And vanilla, well…it just smells really yummy:)
- 3/4 cup coconut oil
- 3/4 cup shea butter
- 1 tbsp jojoba oil (pronounced ho-ho-buh…I wish somebody would’ve told me that so I’m passing that info on to you)
- 1 tbsp vitamin E oil
- 10 drops of lavender essential oil (get that here)
- 20 drops of orange essential oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- large glass mixing bowl
- hand mixer
- Put the coconut oil and shea butter in the bowl. Mix with the hand mixer, starting on low speed until everything is incorporated. Then turn the mixer up to high speed and whip the coconut oil and shea butter until they’re a light and fluffy whipped mixture.
- Add in the jojoba, vitamin E, essential oils and vanilla. Whip again with the mixer until just incorporated.
- Store in an airtight container in a cool dark place.
Let’s talk for a second about essential oils shall we? Using quality essential oils is of the utmost importance. Always use therapeutic grade, pure, uncut essential oils. To get the benefits of essential oils, you need to make sure that you’re not using oils with chemicals or pesticides! You can check out my essential oils page here to see the only kind I use.
Now rub that stuff all over your body and enjoy your moisturized, glowing radiant skin!
